I am Dr. Darin Detwiler, Assistant Dean and Associate Teaching Professor / Lead Faculty at Northeastern University’s College of Professional Studies.
I split my day into a few primary functions:
- Communication and follow-up with students
- Preparing original lectures/materials, as well as student support resources
- Engaging students individually or in groups
- Facilitating learning and grading students’ deliverables
I split my week into larger activities:
- Industry service/networking (not education, but food, supply chain, technology, etc.)
- Researching/writing for industry magazines/websites/books/chapters
- Preparing or engaged in presenting/lecturing/keynote speaking at industry and government events across North America and abroad
- Interviewing guest speakers on video for my class ‘podcast’
- Preparing for future courses
Cons
Can be limiting on calendar availability for non-teaching activities
Pros
Contributing to the field, learning from students, engaging with students’ fresh ideas and questions, networking, sense of purpose, being engaged with new research, giving back to industry (in terms of progress)
