Travel Writer – Rana Good

My days could not be more different! Some days I’ll wake up and go to my “office” which is my couch in New York City. Some days I’ll wake up in a 5-star resort on a remote island. Either way, I’m always working on my laptop and completing a variety of tasks.

As a travel writer, there are two parts – experience and coverage. The experience part involves me traveling to hotels and destinations and coverage is me writing about it for publications. I’m that annoying person you see on Instagram in a dream destination every few weeks but there’s very much also a less glamorous aspect to this work — jetlag, furious typing on airplanes, and working odd hours to file stories. I write for large publications like Forbes, Travel + Leisure, and Coveteur.

My typical day is that there is no typical day. Some days are filled with exploring a country via landmarks, attractions, and culture, and some days involve me typing on a laptop at home all day. I arguably have most people’s dream job which is traveling the world for work and staying at some of the most extraordinary properties on the globe.

Pros

The ability to see some of the best places in the world as my job and getting to have once-in-a-lifetime experiences on a regular basis.

Cons

The downside is jetlag. Another downside to this job is that it’s popular (go figure) and that many publications are struggling at the moment. It can be difficult to secure an assignment.
